Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
Azorra has delivered the first of three new Airbus A220-300 aircraft to Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea’s flag carrier, marking a new airline partnership for Azorra and the first Airbus A220-300 to enter commercial service in Papua New Guinea.
Delivered from Azorra’s orderbook with Airbus, the aircraft was assembled in Mirabel, Canada, and arrived in Papua New Guinea today ahead of the country’s 50th anniversary of independence on September 16th. Azorra will deliver two more A220-300s to Air Niugini with one later this year and one in 2026.
These new generation, crossover aircraft will support the airline’s fleet modernization efforts as it replaces its current fleet of Fokker jets. Eight additional A220-100 aircraft are due to be delivered to Air Niugini directly from Airbus. With greater range and capacity, the A220 will enable Air Niugini to serve key routes – such as to Hong Kong and Singapore – more efficiently, with lower cost per seat and enhanced network performance.
Born from a clean sheet design, the Airbus A220 was designed for efficiency and performance in the 100-160 seat market. The state-of-the-art technology aircraft offers passengers the widest economy seats in its class, fewer middle seats thanks to its 2×3 configuration, large panoramic windows, and a 50% lower noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.
John Evans, CEO, Azorra, says: “Azorra is honored to partner with Air Niugini and the proud people of Papua New Guinea in delivering the airline’s first Airbus A220, a historic milestone as the nation celebrates 50 years of independence.
“With its unmatched range, performance, and comfort in its category, this next-generation aircraft will strengthen Air Niugini’s vital role in connecting communities, driving economic growth, and opening new links across the Asia-Pacific and Oceania regions. We are deeply grateful for the close collaboration with Airbus and Pratt & Whitney in delivering a turnkey fleet solution that supports Air Niugini’s modernization strategy and ushers in a new era of opportunity for the airline, its passengers, and the country.”
Captain Samiu Taufa MBE, Officer in Charge and Acting Chief Operations Officer, Air Niugini, says: “Welcoming our first Airbus A220 marks an exciting new chapter not only for Air Niugini but for the future of aviation in Papua New Guinea. Its arrival, ahead of our nation’s 50th anniversary of independence, is a proud moment that represents our dedication to delivering improved connectivity and elevated travel experiences. We are grateful to our partners at Azorra, Airbus and Pratt & Whitney for helping to make this milestone possible.”
The delivery represents Azorra’s sixth A220 customer and makes Air Niugini the 25th airline to operate the A220 worldwide.
